Lipoprotein(a) — Lp(a) — is a genetically determined cardiovascular risk factor that affects approximately 1 in 5 people worldwide. It cannot be meaningfully lowered by statins, diet, or exercise. The only way to know your level is to test it. So where do you get an Lp(a) test in Switzerland, and what does it cost?

Lp(a) test costs in Switzerland

A standalone Lp(a) test at a Swiss certified laboratory costs approximately CHF 30–60 when ordered by a physician. Without KVG reimbursement, you pay this directly. As part of Aeonix's Vital Edge plan (CHF 795/year) and above, Lp(a) is included alongside ApoB and 58 other biomarkers in a single comprehensive panel.

Does Swiss health insurance cover Lp(a) testing?

KVG basic insurance covers Lp(a) testing when medically indicated — for example, in patients with premature cardiovascular disease or strong family history. For healthy adults seeking proactive screening, it is generally not reimbursed under basic insurance. Some supplementary insurance plans may cover it under a prevention budget.

Why you should test Lp(a) at least once

Elevated Lp(a) — defined as above 50 mg/dL or 125 nmol/L — doubles the risk of heart attack and significantly increases stroke risk. Because it is almost entirely genetically determined, a single lifetime measurement is often sufficient to establish your baseline risk. The ESC recommends that everyone should know their Lp(a) level at least once in their adult life.

What to do if your Lp(a) is elevated

Elevated Lp(a) cannot be lowered by lifestyle changes alone. Clinical management focuses on aggressively reducing other modifiable cardiovascular risks: optimising LDL (ideally below 1.8 mmol/L with elevated Lp(a)), controlling blood pressure, eliminating smoking, and considering aspirin therapy after cardiovascular risk assessment. New RNA-based therapies targeting Lp(a) are currently in Phase III trials.
